It’s always a great spectacle with the chance to see world champions ply their trades.
While some of the events seem a bit niche – think cow pat throwing – the games have a participatory element that’s vital to the vibrancy of rural communities.
The awards back this up. This year’s supreme winner was a Palmerston North high school pupil who excels at target shooting.
Staging them in a city centre is also a great move. Almost everyone in society could do with moving more and with the games show, there are a million ways to do it.
Who knows, maybe the world’s next world record gumboot thrower has been inspired.
