More and more we’re beginning to really hear and better understand the stories of food from a pre-European NZ.
Genomic scientists here are working with iwi to better understand significant native species such as mānuka and rewarewa.
Mānuka especially is a vital species for the primary sector, with significant value being achieved from its healthy properties and its history in Māori medicine.
There are undoubtedly many more native species that could be developed in this way, but it takes the knowledge of tangata whenua, science, and production and processing to bring success.
With more collaboration, we can make this happen.
