More than 2000 bulls and steers were offered and with strong support from Dannevirke, Hawke’s Bay and South Auckland, prices were right up to recent fairs.

Quality was very good with weaners a credit to vendors, and heavy weights in the top lines saw prices exceed $1000.

Steers numbered 1710, with the heavier exotics selling for higher per-head prices than Angus, though cpk premiums belonged to the traditional lines. Top exotic lines fetched $1050-$1150, medium $800-$950, small $720-$780. Angus sold to $980-$1075, medium $790-$880, small $650-$740, and the very tail end $470-$520. Heavy Simmental-cross bulls topped the sale at $1280, with other top lines at $1015-$1280, medium $800-$950, small $570-$700.

Heifers had their turn on Thursday and while the buying bench was reduced, small to medium weaners sold to recent levels, and heavier types eased.

A yarding of 1135 was mainly bought by South Auckland, Pahiatua and Hawke’s Bay buyers. Top lines made $810-$990, medium $670-$770, younger, smaller types $580-$640, with a tail end at $410-$470.
