Latest USDA figures show US cheese production up

The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has released dairy product manufacturing data for August 2015.

Total cheese production (excluding cottage cheese) is up 3.5% on August 2014 but down 1.7% on July 2015. Cheese production has been up slightly all year compared to the same months last year. At a state level, cheese production was down the most in Iowa (-12%). California production is also down (-3.4%). Production was been up the most in New York and Ohio (9.6% and 8.4% respectively). Wisconsin was up 5.3%.

Butter was down, both compared to August 2014 (-1.2%) and to July 2015 (-3.5%). Butter has been down on 2014 for most months this year compared to the same months last year. When taken at a state level, Pennsylvania butter production is up considerably. It has increased by 85.7% on August 2014.

Skim milk powder (SMP) is down 21.2% on August 2014, but is up on July 2015 production (+15%). Similar to butter, SMP has been down on 2014 for most months this year. The reduction in SMP production is offset by an increase in nonfat dry milk (NFDM).

NFDM is up 6.7% on August 2014, though down 20% on July 2015. NFDM has been up on 2014 figures most months this year. The highest increase compared to the same month last year was in January.
