Keeping score

The need for farmers to keep detailed farm records was reiterated at the recent FAR annual results round-up. FAR chief executive Nick Pyke outlined a draft of Good Management Practices for the arable industry as required by Environment Canterbury’s Matrix of Good Management project. While these are yet to be made public what was apparent was the need for farmers to maintain accurate and auditable farm records.

Pyke said Overseer, Farm Environment Plans and the Matrix of Good Management project all required data so farm data management systems were becoming increasingly important.

ProductionWise is one such system that has been developed specifically for the arable industry.

Pyke said the industry needs systems that are easy to manage and allow real-time data collection but individuals also need to know who has access to that data and where it is being used.

Apps are becoming an increasingly valuable in-paddock data collection tool and systems are being developed to let farm consultants and advisers input data and information into a programme on their client’s behalf.

Similarly, arable farmers supplying feed to the dairy industry should be able to provide accurate input records for feed declaration forms. Both Fonterra and Westland Milk Products are asking that dairy farmers be able to trace the feed they are using and what agrichemicals were used in the production of that feed.
