Hills of black gold

Johan Bremmer and his family’s finishing operation in the central North Island is turning heavyweight gains into a lucrative trade. Russell Priest paid a visit. Photos Graeme Brown. Last November the Bremmer family was paid $100,000 for a unit load of cattle, believed to be the largest amount the processing company has ever outlaid for such a load. The 35 animals were Angus three-year-old steers bought in July. Their average slaughter weight was 457kg, and at a schedule price of $6.25/kg equated to $2856 a head.

Johan Bremmer’s particular field of expertise is trading and finishing livestock along with recognising buying and selling opportunities. These are skills he honed as a stock agent although he believes this is only part of the story.

“Buying and selling livestock is an addiction. You see people who make a lot of money out of trading livestock who just can’t or don’t want to give it up. You do it intuitively based on a gut feeling – it’s very difficult to explain.”
