Heart of the south

A 171 hectare dairy farm for sale in the heart of central Southland milked 480 cows for 208,688kg milksolids (MS) last season.
Reading Time: 2 minutes

Located at South Hillend, 15km from Centre Bush and 23km from Winton, the rectangular property runs over flat contour with two road frontages, allowing for easy access with minimal interruption to the day-to-day running of the farm.
All production is achieved without the use of nitrogen. The best production was during the 2013-14 season when it reached 240,049kg MS. Concentrates added into the system include 2kg of palm kernel and meal per head per day from calving to the end of mating and then 1kg for the rest of the season, with 300 bales of balage made on the farm.
The installation of a new effluent system future-proofs and incorporates a stone trap to a clay-lined holding pond with stirrer before being pumped to a travelling irrigator via underground pipes and hydrants.
At the centre of the farm is the 50-bail rotary dairy that was built just six years ago and is fully automated with Milkaware plant, Afimilk computer system, auto drafting, auto wash, auto drain and automatic cup removers. Added to that is an in-dairy meal feeding system with two meal heads and molasses feeding. The rectangular yard leading into the dairy caters for more than 500 cows and has a backing gate and scraper.
Its central location on the farm means minimal walking distances for the cows to the dairy from the 67 main paddocks. Among the other facilities around the farm are an older 32-aside rotary dairy and a large seven-bay covered concrete yard used as a standoff shed.
Effluent from this shed can be pumped to the new effluent pond and then irrigated on to paddocks.
Three calf sheds on the farm total 10 bays and completing the facilities is a fertiliser bin and a three-bay implement-workshop shed.
A 1950s brick and roughcast house has three bedrooms, while a second home on the farm is a three-bedroom cottage.
Wayne Clarke from Southern Wide Real Estate says the strength of the unit is its shape, soils and location.
“It is just a very straight-forward farm with minimal walks to manage the dairy and located in one of the really prime Southland farming locations.”
The farm has a deadline sale closing on February 1 and earlier offers will be considered.

It can be viewed at www.southernwide.co.nz web ref SWI1555.
