Burleigh Grange Farm has had all the hard work done with its conversion and now, in its second season, the sale of the 105 hectare south Canterbury farm creates an opportunity for someone to step into farm ownership.

Nick Young from Bayleys in south Canterbury says the seaside farm’s conversion has been well thought-out and has abundant water, a modern irrigation system and easy cow-flow.
The farm spreads over flat coastal land near Timaru and peaked at 353 heifers last season, with an average of 330 through the season, to achieve 121,000kg milksolids (MS). This season that is expected to climb to about 140,000kg MS.
The 40-aside herringbone dairy built in 2014 has been set up with Nu Pulse plant and a 600-cow yard. It’s also been set up for automated drafting to be added and Young says it’s has been built to a high standard.
Effluent goes via a 50,000-litre saucer, through a press to a 2.2 million litre storage pond before being applied to pasture by pivot.
Two pivots cover 58.8ha with the balance of the farm irrigated by guns and plans to install K-line this summer. The main house is a two-bedroom cottage, while a second home is rented from a neighbour. A good range of sheds cater for implements, hay and calves.
A 100-cow feed-standoff pad has also been constructed. More than 100 tonnes of silage was made on the farm in spring 2014 and 15t of balage, while the only bought-in feed was 103t of palm kernel.
“It’s an ideal starting unit for a young buyer getting into dairying. It’s in its second year of a conversion so it’s all new and smart and they’re still getting it cranked up.
“It’s got good soils, excellent water and good infrastructure – a tidy unit.”
