GDT updates key statistical indicators

(REPORT RELEASE) The GlobalDairyTrade has given the market an update of its six-monthly Chart Focus report outlining key statistical indicators representing trade on the GDT platform.

Participating bidders for the 12 months to March 2016 were mostly from Asian regions.  The North Asian region accounted for 28% of the participating bidder slightly ahead of the South East Asian and Oceania regions with 24%. Other regions represented were Europe (12%), Africa (10%), Middle East (11%), Central and South America (9%), and North America (6%).

Sales of whole milk powder (WMP) represented half (50%) of total quantity sold on the GDT platform for the 12 months to March 2016. Skimmed milk powder accounted for almost a quarter (23%). Anhydrous milkfat accounted for 11%, butter 8%, cheddar 4% and buttermilk powder, lactose, MPC70, rennet casein and sweet whey powder combined accounted for 4%.

The most popular contract period (CP) for sales was CP2 accounting for 41% of sales. The contract period refers to the month when the product is shipped, product sold in CP1 is shipped in the month after the trading event when it was purchased. CP1 accounted for just 4% of sales in the 12 months to March 2016. Product sold for CP3 accounted for 25%, CP4 16%, CP5 10% and CP6 4%.

Quantities of WMP and SMP sold per month have been trending behind quantities sold at the same time in the previous four years since June last year. The first three months of 2016 also saw the lowest monthly volumes sold compared to the same month in the previous 4 years.
