The most tender and tasty lamb in New Zealand has been found at the grand final of the Beef + Lamb New Zealand Golden Lamb Awards, aka the Glammies, at the Wanaka A&P Show. Robert, Rosemary, Grant and Teri Gardyne’s Perendale from Central Otago’s Oturehua beat the top 20 finalists to be named 2016 Glammies Grand Champion, claiming not only the title but $2500 in prize money.

The competition, sponsored by NZX Agri and Zoetis, received 173 entries that were subject to stringent scientific testing at Carne Technologies.

The top 20 were then tasted at the grand final judging on Friday.

The Gardynes can be certain their winning lamb entry was indeed the best of the best, with five top chefs doing the tasting.

The judges looked for tenderness, juiciness, aroma, texture and flavour.

“This has been a long time coming,” Robert Gardyne said.

The winners were announced by retiring B+LNZ chief executive Scott Champion. Assisting was head of NZX Agri, Tony Leggett. NZX Agri was the main sponsor of the Glammies.

The Best of Breed open-class winner was Gary Fordyce of Gore with a Wiltshire.

Forbes and Angus Cameron won the Best of Breed crossbred class with a Romney Growbulk cross.

The Best of Breed terminal cross section winner was Andrew Tripp of Gore with a Romney Texel Suffolk cross.

The retail section winner was Alliance Group’s Pure South with a Romney Southdown cross.

The 20 finalists were chosen after their meat was cooked, cooled and scientifically assessed for pH, yield, tenderness and colour.

The Gardynes receive the Glammies Trophy and $2000. The winner of each class receives $500.
