Amersfoort, the Netherlands – Since FrieslandCampina introduced its route2020 corporate strategy, with CSR and sustainability as cornerstones, the company has taken important steps towards a more sustainable dairy production chain.
Reading Time: 3 minutes

The dairy company has formulated a serie of goals for 2020 in four priority areas: health & nutrition, efficient and sustainable production chains, dairy development in Africa and Asia, and sustainable dairy farming. These goals were used to create action plans for the coming years. Over the longer term, FrieslandCampina has the ambition to contribute to solving three global challenges: the growing world population, aging farmers and the scarcity of natural raw materials. The CSR Report 2013 gives an overview of the most important achievements. As of this year, FrieslandCampina’s CSR Report is only available digitally. This is one way the company is contributing to the reduction of paper use, alongside other measures to tackle waste.

Cees ‘t Hart, CEO Royal FrieslandCampina:
“Milk is rich in nutrients and provides high-quality protein, essential vitamins and minerals. In light of its nutritional value, affordability and relatively low climate impact, milk fits perfectly into the concept of ‘sustainable diets’ supported and promoted by the UN Food & Agricultural Organisation. FrieslandCampina aims to contribute to nourishing a growing world population through safe and healthy diets with a low environmental impact by reducing its environmental footprint and by research, innovation and investing in sustainable solutions.”

Global challenges
Feeding the world’s growing population will be a challenge and has implications for the environment. How can enough, affordable, nutritious food be produced? Fertile land and clean drinking water are already scarce in some regions. In view of the aging population, will there still be enough farmers to produce our daily food? And will they earn enough to sustain their families? FrieslandCampina wants to contribute towards solving these global challenges through its activities.

Growing world poulation

  • Feed the growing world population
  • Ensure global security, nutrition security and affordable nutrition
  • Maintain food safety and consumer trust

Aging Farmers

  • Interesting young people in farming as a profession by offering good prospects for the future and by so doing responding to the worldwide fast-rising average age of farmers
  • Ensure that farmers earn an adequate income to maintain their farms and to create a positive future for themselves and their descendants
  • 750-900 million depend on the dairy farming sector for their income

Scarcity of natural raw materials

  • Reduce CO2 emissions and use more renewable energy

  • Conserve nature and maintain biodiversity

Key CSR developments 2013

In some improvements clients, partners and member dairy farmers played a prominent role. Key figures for 2013 are also available.
