"Scattered rain in March was not enough to ease the irrigation restrictions many farmers are still facing and extremely dry conditions continue to affect pasture growth rates."

There was no reference to the seasonal milk production forecast in the latest Global Dairy Update. However the companies latest forecast for the season is 1551 million kgMS. For this forecast to be achieved milk intakes during April and May will need to be 29% lower than during the same period last year, and also lower than the volumes collected during the final two months of the 2012-13 season when much of NZ was in a severe drought.

Fonterra's milk collection in Australia for the nine months to 31 March reached 100 million kgMS, 6% higher than the same period last season.
