European SMP quotations decline further from intervention level

Latest EU quotations published by the European Commission show prices declined across most products for the week ending August 30, 2015.

Whole milk powder prices rose marginally by 0.4% sitting at €212/100kg but compared to the same time last year was 20% behind.

Whey powder also increased for the week by 0.8% to €63/100kg. Of all dairy product quotations whey powder is down the most year-on-year by 29%.

Butter prices fell 1.1% to €281/100kg and skimmed milk powder prices were down 0.6% to €169/100kg.

Butter quotations for the week are well above the intervention price of €221.75/100kg.

SMP quotations paint a different picture comparing to the intervention price of €169.80/100kg. Quotations of SMP in Latvia are far below intervention at €157/100kg which has triggered offering into Public Intervention (PI) and Private Storage Aid (PSA). Ireland, Germany, The Netherlands and Poland also quote prices below intervention level, with Belgium SMP prices sitting slightly above intervention levels at €170/100kg.

Offerings of SMP into PI are trickling in. Belgium offered the most with 1165t. Germany, Lithuania, Poland also offered quantities of SMP into PI. Latvia and Finland offered 108t and 198t of SMP into intervention, the first from these two countries in this intervention period.

Total SMP offered for the week was 2630t bringing the cumulative total to 11,489t.

An additional 754t of SMP was offered into PSA with product coming from Germany, Latvia, The Netherlands, and the UK. The was also the first week Latvia has entered SMP into PSA since it opened in September last year.

Ireland and The Netherlands continued to offer the largest quantities of butter into PSA with 1367t and 1969t respectively. Smaller amounts came from Belgium, Germany, Austria and UK bringing the total for the week to 4041t.

Butter stocks in PSA at the end for June were at 74,955t. SMP stocks in PSA at the end of June were at 17,632t.
