Pamu has its place in the sector  Pamu released its annual results this week and it’s had a pretty good year. The government-owned farmer, formerly Landcorp, gets a fair bit of flack from all quarters.

Some wonder what the Government is doing running farms, others think the land would be better used by private landowners.

But it’s proven in the past few years that it can look at where food production is headed, try a few things on the sector’s behalf, and show what’s possible.

For example, Pamu signed an agreement to supply high-end Danish shoemaker Glerups with strong wool. It’s into sheep and deer milking and is phasing out palm kernel completely. It also trains young people to be great farmers.

There will always be those that are ideologically opposed to its existence, but Pamu seems to have found its niche as a first-mover that can highlight new ways to add value.
