Arable sector ready for its moment in the sun  The arable sector thinks its time to shine is now –  and it could be right. Plant proteins have rocketed in popularity recently and are only expected to continue to grow.

New Zealand retailers are looking to source grains locally for their products.

Livestock farmers are looking for other feed options as curbs go on the use of palm kernel.

And new crops such as hemp are finding favour with both growers and consumers.

Greenhouse gas and freshwater regulations mean incorporating cropping could be a solution for some farmers in some catchments.

The arable industry is already adaptable by design; one crop in summer will be followed by a different one in the autumn.

It’s a trait that should serve it well and one the rest of the industry could learn from.
