Peter Lawry is a believer in the better mousetrap theory, only in his case it is field mowers.

The Hastings engineering businessman began building mowers as an apprentice 30 years ago and always believed better models could be developed.

After time on his family orchard, using mowers, Lawry founded Precision Metalworks in 2001 and has now launched Glaber.

In the past year he has designed and made the Glaber Uppercut 2700 mower to meet the needs of farmers and orchardists better than anything that has come before.

At the Northland Field Days Lawry described Glaber’s advantages as strength with comparatively light weight and being built to endure with the very best components.

It has a cutting width of 2.7m and total width of 2.94m and a weight of 588kg. There is an offset option of 440mm.

The heavy duty gearbox is Italian 540rpm PTO rated 65hp and 1000rpm rated 122hp.

The rotationally moulded guards won’t rust, scratch or dent and the deck is made from 5mm plate.

The entire frame is sandblasted and zinc sprayed before being painted with a two coat system.

There are three rotors and nine blades.

The cutter discs are triangular shaped with cutter tips on the apexes.

They have big sealed bearings and oversized spindles 40mm in diameter.

Height adjustment is in 10mm increments from zero to 170mm.

Glaber is also producing a greenkeeper model which is supported by front and rear rollers instead of skids.

Lawry said Glaber mowers were priced comparably with similar width models from other manufacturers and delivery was free nationwide.
