China imports less milk powder

China imports of milk powder were well below year ago levels in April.
Reading Time: < 1 minute

Whole milk powder (WMP) imports were down 65% on the same month last year and also down 37% on the same month in 2013.

In the period from January to April 2015 China imported less than half of the volume of WMP that it did during the same period a year earlier. NZ has actually grown its market share this year to just under 99%, leaving just a few hundred tonnes for the other major suppliers such as France, Netherlands and Australia.

Skim milk powder (SMP) also fell in April but by a much lesser degree than WMP. SMP imports dropped 13% compared with April 2014. For the year to date SMP imports are down 33%. NZ has also grown its market share in this category from just over 50% to 74%. The remaining supply is divided quite evenly between the EU, Australia, and the US.
