Cheese and SMP key manufactured products for August

Australian manufactured production is up across most categories during August and for the season-to-date Dairy Australia statistics show. Whole milk powder (WMP) and whey powder are, however, both down in manufactured volumes for the month and the season. Australian milk production for August also increased by 3.7% compared to the previous year.

Skim milk powder received the biggest gain in both percentage terms and volume terms. A total of 4223t extra SMP was produced for the month of August, up 22.8% from a year earlier. Season-to-date (June-August) volumes have increased by 22.3% to 42,441t.

Australia has also produced more cheese for the season-to-date with a total 44,508t. This is a 7.3% gain on volumes produced over the same period a year earlier. For the month of August volumes of cheese were up by 7.6% to 25,807t. 

Butter production was also up for August, to 6593t (+7.5%). Butteroil (anhydrous milkfat in NZ) was up to 1086t (+31.3%). Season-to-date both products were up by 1.7% and 1.6% respectively.

Production of WMP and whey powder are both down for August but they are produced in relatively small volumes in Australia.  WMP production dropped back by almost a quarter to 4131t (-22.5%) and whey powder was down by 9.9% to 3638t.

The season-to-date fall in production for WMP was not as drastic, dropping by 2.4%. For whey powder, volumes are back by 7.1%.
