Century Farms want more

Century Farms is calling on families who have clocked up 100 years or more of farming their family property. The organisation of centenarians is keen to hear from families who have reached the century milestone of family farm ownership to enter the 2016 New Zealand Century Farms and Station Awards.

The awards, first held in Lawrence, central Otago, in 2005 aim to capture and preserve family histories that might otherwise be lost through the generations.

To date 337 families from throughout NZ had joined the circle of centenarians and anyone wanting to apply for 2016 was urged to enter before the end of the year.

Eligible families could submit narratives of their farm history together with copies of related photographs and supporting documents, which were then archived at the Alexander Turnbull Library in Wellington, ensuring all records were kept in perpetuity.

A formal dinner in Lawrence each May honours the awardees and their significant achievement of 100 or more years in farming.

It was a chance for recipients to meet each other and formally receive their distinctive bronze plaques and certificates to display on their properties, awards chairman Symon Howard said.

It was important the personal sacrifices, perseverance and commitment of the previous generations were recognised.

“Keeping any farm or station in a family from generation to generation through challenging times is an impressive achievement and deserves to be recognised.

“We’ve had 10 very successful years and attracted significant interest, mainly through word-of-mouth but there are still plenty of long-standing farming families out there that deserve acknowledgement,” Howard said.

Century Farms had plans to raise its public profile to attract applications from right across the country.

“We want to capture as many of the family stories and pictures that have contributed to NZ’s rich agricultural heritage as we possibly can,” Howard said.

Applications for 2016 close on December 31. For more information go to www.centuryfarms.co.nz.
