Australia’s dairy exports improve on volume and value

(DATA RELEASE) Australian dairy exports for the season-to-date (July-January) have extended the lead ahead of the same period last year according to statistics from Dairy Australia.

The volume of dairy products exported to January 2016 is 7.1% ahead of the same period a year earlier and the value is up by 5.5%. This compares with the figures up to December 2015 of 3.2% ahead in terms of volume and 0.7% ahead in terms of value.

For the seven months to January 2016 an additional 30,000t of dairy products has been put on the global market from Australia compared to the same period a year earlier. For the six months to December the additional volume was 12,000t.

A total of 76,000t of dairy product was exported from Australia during the month of January 2016 the statistics show, 18,000t more than January 2015.

For the season-to-January, butter and whey products are still behind the same period a year earlier down 43% and 29% respectively in volume terms although this has improved from the situation a month earlier when they were down 47% and 33%. Butter exports for January were down 213t and whey product exports were down 342t compared to a year earlier.

By value, they have also improved since last month although still behind the same period a year earlier at 36% each.

The only other product to be behind in value terms for the season-to-January is skimmed milk powder (SMP) exports 15% behind the same period a year earlier, but this has improved from being behind 17% for the season-to-December. In volume terms SMP exports were up 18% for the season-to-January, an improvement on the month earlier of 15% with an additional 3800t of SMP being exported in the month of January year-over-year.

Australia's biggest dairy export category by value, cheese has made vast improvements in January. Cheddar exports were up 9% for the year-to-January in volume terms with an additional 1360t being exported in January compared to last year. The value of cheddar for the season-to-January is now up 1.6%, an improvement on being down 2.6% for the season-to-December. 

Other cheese exports were up 18% for the season-to-January compared to being up 14% for the season-to-December with an additional 3600t being exported for the month versus a year earlier. The value of other cheese exports for the season-to-January is up 16% compared to being up 12% for the season-to-December.

Whole milk powder (WMP) exports were up just 1% for the season-to-January which has jumped up from being down 5% for the season-to-December. Exports of WMP for the month of January were up by 2200t year-over-year. The value of WMP exports for the season-to-January is up by 60%, and in December it was up by 46%.
