Australian milk production growth slows down

Australian milk production for September is still growing on last year’s volumes but at a slower rate than last month, Dairy Australia data shows.

Total Australian milk production for September was up 0.8% compared to September 2014. This growth is back on August's which was 3.7% up on the same month a year earlier. A total of 970 million litres of milk was produced in Australia for the month of September compared to 798m litres a month earlier.

Victoria, which last season took 65% of the national share of milk production, saw a decrease in its September milk production by 0.2%. Queensland, which accounted for a 4.2% share last season was the only other state to decrease its milk production in September at -2.8%. 

New South Wales and Tasmania, which accounted for 11.9% and 9.2% of last season's milk production, increased output in September by 3.2% and 3.9%. South Australia and Western Australia increased output by 2.9% and 5.9% respectively.

Season-to-date (July-September), total Australian milk production is ahead of the same point last season by 3.1%. 

Across the Tasman, New Zealand is not seeing any growth at all for the same month. New Zealand's September milk output was 7.2% behind last season.

New Zealand season-to-date (June-September) production was down by 3.6%. In August, this measure was up by 1.6%.

In the US, September milk production was up by 0.4% for September and season-to-date (January-September) is up by 1.4%.
