Australia and US Dairy Exports – January 2014

Australian and US dairy export figures for January 2014 has been released.

Australian exports for January 2014 showed gains for whole milk powder (WMP) and skim milk powder (SMP), at 135% and 27% compared to January 2013. All other commodities had lower export figures for the month– anhydrous milkfat (AMF) was lower by 30%, butter by 24%, cheese by 9% and whey by 13% compared to the same time last year. The current season-to-date exports for all commodities are lower than the previous season-to-date, with the exception of WMP which is 7% higher.

US exports for January 2014 showed gains across all products, most notably WMP exports being almost four times of WMP exports at the same time last year. AMF export volumes have also increased substantially, totalling 1685 tonnes in January 2014; volumes for the first half of the 2013 calendar year were very low– at a monthly average of 234 tonnes. SMP export volumes are still the largest per commodity from the US by far, totalling 41,323 tonnes in January 2014.

All the main exporters, with the exception of the EU27, have now released export data up to January 2014. The graphs below compare WMP and SMP exports for Argentina, Australia, NZ and US ffor the last year. NZ remains the largest WMP exporter by a large margin, having more than five times the combined volume of Argentina, Australia and US for the January 2014. EU27 is the second largest WMP exporter; its most recent data up to November 2013 shows WMP export volumes of 29,591 tonnes which was roughly 20% of NZ November 2013 WMP exports which was 153,503 tonnes.
