An AgResearch social researcher, Jill Walcroft, is exploring whether using social media, including a blog and Twitter, can help her and her company talk about their science in a way that is meaningful to a range of people.

“The whole point of the study was to get people, mainly farmers, interested in science as people often think science is too hard and their eyes glaze over,” she said.

She tweeted links to her blog posts about research the institute had conducted to AgResearch’s 1100 followers and her 150 followers.

“It is exciting when the links get retweeted as my reach is increased.”

She wanted the conversations and the blog posts to be farmer-driven.

“I would like to see farmers asking for more information on topics and asking questions.”

She had covered summer shade for cool cows, carbon dioxide and clover and the introduction of novel endophytes in ryegrass.
