A gem in Southland

A dairy unit for sale in Southland with a good production history has all the ingredients for a quality first farm or adding a second.

The 91ha unit at Mataura Island, which despite its name is not an island at all, is south of Edendale and produced 108,000kg milksolids (MS) last season from 250 cows. It is for sale at $3.96 million plus GST, if any.

"It's a gem of a dairy unit that has the production history to prove its worth," Mark Wilson from Southern Wide Real Estate said. "A good, strong, proven performer in the heart of Southland dairy country,"

"It ideally suits buyers looking for a better-quality first farm or an additional farm as it is an established dairy farm in a proven district and has been well maintained."

Flat contour spreads over fertile river silt soils in the 41 paddocks that have a pasture renewal programme of about 4ha each year.

Cows are wintered off the farm from the end of May and return at the beginning of August for the season, with management following a low-input system.

The hub of the operation is the 18-aside herringbone dairy with NuPulse plant and a circular yard for 220 cows, and an additional concrete area. A new consent is underway for the effluent system that incorporates a weeping wall and a 60-day holding pond before flowing to a travelling irrigator.

The new consent will have an expiry date of 2024 for 270 cows.

Beyond the dairy is a six-bay implement shed with an enclosed workshop, a three-bay and a five-bay hayshed, a calf shed converted from a former dairy, a concrete silage pad, and a 400-tonne gravel-base pad.

A tidy three-bedroom brick and roughcast home with an office completes the picture. To view the farm, visit www.southernwide.co.nz. For more information contact Wilson on 027 491 7078 or Dallas Lucas on 027 432 5774.
