Small numbers of R2 steers and bulls were the highlight of the Taupo cattle sale on Thursday, and buyers travelled some distance to secure lines, Shane Scott from Central Livestock reported.

Top Angus R2 steers, 375kg, sold to $3.29/kg, Angus-Friesian, 343kg, $3.16/kg. Friesian bulls were very hot property because numbers are hard to find. Three lines at 373-478kg made $3.25-$3.35/kg. One line of Angus-Friesian heifers, 361kg, sold for $1080, $2.99/kg.

The R1 cattle were dairy-beef and mainly left to local buyers. With feed still short, the market was softer in comparison with the older cattle, though there were highlights. Hereford-Friesian steers, 352kg, made $1070 at $3.03/kg, with a lighter line up to $3.90/kg. Friesian bulls, 234-252kg, earned $795-$815, and the best of the heifers was a small line of Angus-cross, 243kg, at $805, $3.31/kg. Friesian and beef-Friesian autumn-born weaners sold very well. Friesian bulls, 114-152kg, traded at $535-$640, Hereford-Friesian heifers, 88-120kg, $405-$555.
