A big yarding of in-calf cows and heifers was offered at Rongotea on Wednesday, with solid prices across all classes of cattle, Darryl Harwood from NZ Farmers Livestock reported.

Demand was variable for in-calf dairy heifers. The top Friesian lines earned $1070, $2.18/kg, lesser Friesian and Jersey $1.62-$1.69/kg. In-milk Friesian cows, 345-485kg, sold for $2-$2.49/kg. Boner cows ranged from $1.85-$2.04/kg for heavy lines to $1.43-$1.68/kg for lesser types, with some of these in-calf. Friesian cows with calves at foot traded at $860-$1160.

The store section offered up a mixture of cattle, with most age groups and types represented, though in small numbers. R2 Hereford-Friesian steers, 493kg, fetched $2.88/kg, with 415kg heifers not far behind at $2.81/kg. Friesian heifers, 424-462kg, earned $2.40/kg, Jersey, 236-320kg, $1.71-$1.78/kg.

R1 cattle continued to sell to strong demand for the better types, although bargains could be picked up on the lesser quality lines. Crossbred steers had the weight, and at 207-225kg, sold for $540-$680. Lighter Hereford-Friesian matched them at $610-$650. Friesian steers, 165-170kg, earned $570-$580. The bull market was strong and Friesian, 223-308kg, fetched $680-$830, Hereford-Friesian, 150-253kg, $400-$740. The top heifers were 350kg Hereford-Friesian that returned $900. Most other lines made $495-$685.

Calf numbers continued to increase and prices were strong. Good Friesian bull calves sold at $180-$210, medium $130-$170, small $80-$120. Hereford-Friesian started at $300-$360, medium $220-$280, lighter $150-$200. Crossbred earned $50-$60. Good Hereford-Friesian heifers traded at $200-$235, medium $180-$190, small $100-$150.

Mixed-age ewes fetched $35-$46, mixed-sex lambs $50-$73.
