Lambs and ewes were met with strong interest at Balclutha on Wednesday, Barry Osborne from PGG Wrightson reported.

The store lamb yarding was large but that didn’t subdue prices as very strong demand pushed them up $4-$6. Quality was strong, which also pushed prices upwards. The market for top lines was $88-$93, medium $83-$86, lighter $61-$72.

Competition for prime lambs was strong, helped by very good quality. The overall market lifted by about $5/head. Heavy lambs traded at $105-$125, medium $95-$104, lighter $80-$93.

There were plenty of prime ewes at the sale but bidding was fierce enough to lift the market by about $3/head. Heavy mixed-age ewes fetched $95-$111, medium $85-$93, the rest $72-$84. Heavy two-tooths returned $90.

There was only a small yarding of cattle on offer. Poorer types were hard to move but better quality beef types sold to a steady market. R2 Angus-cross steers, 420kg, made $1200, $2.86/kg, Hereford-cross steers, 478kg, $2.68/kg, $1280. Charolais-cross bull calves made $1010, $3.26/kg, Charolais-cross heifers $800, $3.08/kg.
