The plaque, unveiled in September last year, is at Wanaka Airport outside the Alpine Group headquarters; a fitting location given Alpine founder Sir Tim Wallis’ huge involvement and contribution to the deer industry.
More than 50 people, including pilots, crew and shooters died in the mountains and back country of Mount Aspiring National Park during the recovery of deer that started in the late 1960s.
The memorial acknowledges the important role they and others played in establishing the deer farming industry.
