Wormade for healthy cows

Sub-clinical mastitis costs farmers in the vat and in the pocket but there is an alternative to antibiotics which can improve a cow’s natural defences against mastitis, Wormade’s Robert Pickering says.

Wormade is a Waikato biological company that produces an oral mineral supplement (OMS) for dairy cows.

OMS is a biological product that improves animal nutrition and helps build strong immune systems.

The product has shown positive results on cows with high somatic cell counts (SCC) and/or sub-clinical mastitis.

OMS has no withholding period so farmers can put valuable milk into the vat with no risk of grades.

Farmers are looking for an alternative to treating cows with antibiotics because milk is too valuable to lose, Pickering says.

DairyNZ figures show each case of mastitis costs a farmer about $200/cow when taking into account the drugs, discarded milk, labour and production losses.

“There is a trend towards more biological systems with no antibiotics in the farm system. Antibiotics create risks, farmers are risk adverse and OMS has helped many of them reduce their use of antibiotics.”

OMS works to strengthen a cow’s immune system. The immune system fights infection, lowers SCC and reduces clinical cases of mastitis.

The main ingredients in OMS are zinc and copper with other minerals, vitamins, alcohol, antioxidants, organic acids, essential fatty acids and vegetable oils.

The product is approved as a veterinary medicine which is exempt from registration under the Agricultural Compounds and Veterinary Medicines Act.
