The highlight of the day at Tuakau on Thursday was the sale of a very nice line of young 86kg whiteface steers for $630.

The whopping rate of $7.38/kg was probably a record for the saleyards. Other weaner steers also sold well, with most in the 124-200kg range making about $5/kg, $620-$750.

About 860 store cattle were on offer, PGG Wrightson agent Chris Elliott reported, and the sale attracted a good bench of buyers, including some from King Country and Northland. Bidding was brisk through much of the auction as buyers aimed to secure stock before the real grass market gets underway.

Prices for the older steers again outperformed those of the prime market. Heavy 2-year and 30-month lots in the 450-530kg range traded at $2.84-$2.99/kg, a good line of black whitehead steers, 510kg, $1525. Another pen of black whiteface steers, 497kg, earned $3.02/kg, $1500. Steers 400-450kg also sold well, fetching $3.02-$3.10/kg. The yearling market was again strong. Good whiteface steers, 310kg, returned $3.52/kg, $1100, 270kg, $3.81/kg, $1010.

Prices for bulls remained firm, although quality wasn’t as good as the previous week. Medium Friesian bulls, 360-400kg, sold at about $3/kg, 240-300kg $3.10-$3.30/kg.

The market for the older heifers was patchy in comparison with the steers. A nice line of Angus heifers, 420kg, made $2.84/kg, $1205, a whiteface lot, 450kg, $2.78/kg. Lighter 2-year heifers, 400-450kg, earned about $2.60/kg. Demand for yearling heifers was strong, with a 280kg whiteface lot making $3.50/kg. Weaner heifers also sold well. A nice pen of 188kg Angus heifers earned $630, another cut, 160kg, $600. Good whiteface heifers, 155kg, also made $600, lighter lots, about 100kg, $450-$500.

The market at Wednesday’s prime sale eased in line with schedule drops. Steer numbers were limited and prices were back by about 10c/kg on the previous sale, with most heavy lots trading at $2.84-$2.97/kg. The top rate was paid for a very nice line of Angus steers. Medium lots made $2.72-$2.84/kg, lighter $2.55-$2.70/kg. Heifer prices eased by about 20c/kg. Heavy lots sold at $2.78-$2.87/kg, medium $2.70-$2.78/kg, lighter beef heifers $2.58-$2.70/kg. Dairy heifer prices also eased significantly, with a small entry of heavier heifers making $2-$2.30/kg, medium $1.60-$2/kg. Boner cow numbers were reasonably light and prices eased. Heavy boners traded at $1.85-$2.04/kg, medium $1.65-$1.85/kg, lighter $1.30-$1.60/kg. A handful of bulls fetched $2.60-$2.80/kg.

More than 1100 ewes and lambs were presented at Monday’s sheep sale, with prime lambs continuing to come out in big numbers. Heavy primes made $118-$139, medium $106-$118, lighter $95-$105. The best of the store lambs sold up to $105, medium $80, lighter $60. Heavy prime ewes sold up to $88, medium $70, lighter $30-$40. The best of the ewes with lambs at foot made $68 all-counted, others $58.
