Tuakau sales May 9, 11, 12

Numbers were moderate across all sales at Tuakau this week, with boner cows selling on a very firm market, Keith West from Carrfields reported.

Lamb prices improved on Monday, with heavy prime lambs earning $101-$110, medium $95-$100, store types $71-$82. The ewe market sold to steady demand with heavy types making $70-$76 medium $63-$69.

Demand for boner cattle is picking up and cow prices lifted 15-20cpk. Heavy Friesian cows fetched $1.90-$1.99/kg, medium $1.76-$1.88/kg, light $1.52-$1.65/kg. Beef cows returned $2.00-$2.21/kg.

In the prime pens on Wednesday heavy steers traded at $2.75-$2.80/kg, medium $2.68-$2.74/kg, Friesian-cross $2.50-$2.62/kg. Heifers sold to solid demand at $2.68-$2.72/kg for high-yielding types, mediums $2.62-$2.66/kg.

Four hundred cattle were offered on Thursday, and with buyers looking for cattle to carry through winter, demand was strong. R2 steers of good quality sold for $1200-$1420, $2.80-$2.91/kg, medium $1170-$1270, $2.85-$2.99/kg, lighter $950-$1100, $2.78-$2.90/kg. In the heifer pens good beef lines earned $1060-$1120, $2.68-$2.77/kg. One-year steers of good condition fetched $820-$920, bulls $790-$880, heifers $720-$830. Weaner steers mainly made $745-$800 for good types and $640-$700 for medium lines, while bulls, 150kg, returned $490. Weaner heifers traded at $610-$710, medium $530-$590.
