The hay and silage season is coming up fast. Make sure you run the key checks before operating your mower. Some simple maintenance and setting checks will ensure it operates at its best and prolong its working life.

The following checks and adjustments should be made at the start of the hay and silage season.

Cutter Bar:

1. It is important to check the leading edges of cutting discs for signs of wear. Building up worn edges with weld is not a good idea as more often than not the weld will crack and the disc will fly off.

2. All PTO cups and crosses throughout the drive line should be greased regularly.

3. Some models have a slip clutch which should be checked to make sure it has not rusted and seized. It also needs to be set correctly in accordance with the operator’s manual.

4. The oil in the main input gearbox should be replaced each year before mowing begins, then checked regularly during the season.
