Temuka sale June 13

Markets continued to improve at Temuka on Monday, with good lifts in store lamb and prime cattle prices.

Prices hit $3/kg for the first time this season in the store lamb pens, and light to medium ewe and mixed sex lambs made $81-$86. Medium to good types sold on a firm market for both ewe and mixed sex lines, with $83-$91 common.

Most of the prime lamb offering was second and third cut types, and sold on a steady market at $90-$109, while heavy lambs earned $110-$129.

Prime ewes sold on a steady market with most making $60-$89, and a small top end fetched $90-$92.

Prices improved across the board for cattle, with significant lifts for all classes. Hereford-cross and Murray Grey steers firmed to $2.81-$2.91/kg, though were nearly outshone by Hereford-cross and Angus-cross heifers which sold for $2.85-$2.90/kg. Friesian steers were well-finished types and made $2.80-$2.87/kg, while their sisters sold for an impressive $2.75-$2.78/kg. Local trade heifers sold to $2.64-$2.74/kg, with lighter dairy lines at $2.20-$2.38/kg.

Demand for bulls lifted, and prices also improved. Friesian earned $2.69-$2.75/kg, and Hereford and Angus sold up to $2.69-$2.78/kg.

There was a firm tone to the cow market and top Friesian lines fetched $1.79-$1.88/kg, with $1.70-$1.84/kg paid for the next cut. Beef cows were in short supply and sold on a steady market at $2-$2.03/kg.
