Taupo farm hitting its straps

Developed from the remnants of forestry seven years ago, a 129-hectare dairy farm north of Taupo has recently achieved 145,000kg milksolids (MS) from 332 cows.

Located 23km north of Taupo on a quiet country road the farm spreads over flat to easy rolling country and has the infrastructure in keeping with a recent conversion.

Graham Beaufill from PGG Wrightson in Rotorua says it’s an ideal first farm option for sharemilkers or a handy farm to add to the portfolio of a bigger operator.

The farm came out of forestry in 2006 and was converted to dairying two years later with a reasonably central dairy and central race leading through the farm.

“It looks good. All indications of its previous use are gone and it’s a nice farm,” Beaufill said. “It’s just hitting its straps now really and further fertiliser inputs will keep it going forward because it’s a young farm still.”

At its centre is a 30-aside herringbone dairy – with room for four more sets of cups – that has automatic cup removers and in-dairy meal feeders, with twin silos outside to store the meal. Crops are also used for both winter and summer feed and it now has 9ha sown in a mix of chicory, kale and rape that will then be used as part of the ongoing regrassing programme.

Beaufill said good races lead away from the dairy and the longest walk for the cows is only 20 minutes. The farm is split by the road which has low traffic.

Other infrastructure on the farm includes a six-bay implement shed with one lockable bay that has a concrete floor, and a palm kernel or fertiliser bin. Last, but definitely not least, is the three-bedroom home that accommodates the manager.

The farm has a tender date set for April 10. For more details contact Beaufill on 07 349 5489 or 027 4748 073.
