The regular sale on Wednesday was small, with 175 offered. Most types sold well, with prime heifers making $2.83-$2.85/kg, stores $2.76-$2.79/kg. Red Devon steers, 375-380kg, made $2.82-$2.90/kg, other lines $2.77-$2.78/kg. Beef cows were well sought-after and earned $1.85-$2.10/kg, Friesian, $1.82-$1.92/kg.

The 1-year pens offered crossbred bulls at $570-$730, Hereford-Friesian heifers $610-$640. A small line-up of steers was mainly Hereford-cross and traded at $640-$995.

A good turnout of calves and buyers made the dairy-beef calf sale on Thursday successful, despite a clash with the Frankton sale. The 900 calves showed the effect of the wet spring, with many needing some sunshine on their backs to improve condition.

Friesian bulls sold to expectations and matched paddock prices, with 108-120kg returning $470-$510, 97-105kg $430-$460. Lighter calves still sold at about $400, but the market softened. Demand for Hereford-Friesian bulls was strong, with the top lines at 150kg making $700, good quality lines, 100-125kg, $600-$650, Angus-Friesian, $570-$630. Heifers of similar breeding sold to $570 for 145kg, with most earning $450-$500, Angus-Friesian and Friesian-cross $380-$430.
