In a busy day at Stratford on Wednesday a wide variety of cattle sold, from prime and boners through to a good-sized offering of store stock.
Reading Time: < 1 minute

The best of the prime steers were Hereford-Friesian and sold for $2.81/kg, while plainer types earned $2.65-$2.74/kg. Just one line of heifers was offered and made $2.53/kg, with 817kg Hereford bulls up to $2.83/kg and a younger line at $2.80/kg.

Cow prices reflected continued strong demand with empty beef cows selling for $1.94-$1.98/kg, and run-with-the-bull Hereford-Friesian and Hereford-cross $1.74-$1.91/kg. In-calf Hereford-cross were well sought-after, with the tops making $2.15/kg, while second cuts fetched $1.80-$1.97/kg. Dairy cows were not far off the pace either and sold to current market value. Top Friesian and Jersey-cross lines earned $1.76-$1.80/kg with lesser lines at $1.26-$1.52/kg. In-calf Friesian sold for $1.57-$1.84/kg, and Jersey and Jersey-cross were solid at $1.40-$1.74/kg.

Top R3 steers matched prime prices with Hereford-Friesian, 490-604kg, at $2.75-$2.81/kg, Hereford-cross $2.68-$2.70/kg. Heavy Friesian steers sold for $1720, $2.73/kg. R3 heifers were of mixed quality which was reflected in their prices. Simmental-cross, Murray Grey-cross and Angus-Friesian traded at $2.30-$2.49/kg, better Hereford-Friesian up to $2.60/kg.

Quality lines were well sought-after in the R2 pens though lesser types sold for a significant discount in comparison. Top lines of all except Friesian sold for $980-$1350, longer-term types $740-$860. Hereford-Friesian heifers, 395-470kg, had the weight but sold for lower cpk prices at $2.52-$2.58/kg, while lighter Angus-Friesian and Hereford-cross earned $2.71-$2.75/kg.

A big offering of weaner and R1 cattle sold to mixed demand with prices easier on recent sales. R1 steers earned $410-$660, weaners $310-$530. Heifers traded at $450-$650 for R1 lines and $150-$480 for weaners. Bull prices were variable with the weaners not far behind the older bulls at $400-$560 and $330-$600 respectively.

Sheep numbers were limited to store lambs which went under the hammer for $55-$70 and run-with-the-ram Suffolk ewes at $82.
