Stratford prime, boner and bull sale May 10

A small yarding of cattle was offered at Stratford on Tuesday, with steady demand meaning all lines sold at market value.

Prime cattle were limited in number, with most plainer types, or fitting local trade requirements. Beef steers, 482-485kg, sold for $2.75/kg, while the best of the bulls made $2.69-$2.81/kg, and a line of prime heifers $1691, $2.75/kg. Jersey-cross bulls, 370kg, returned $1073, $2.90/kg, Friesian, 471kg, $2.76/kg. Yearling bulls were also offered and fetched $380-$688.

The cows and heifers were all dairy or dairy-cross and sold to good demand, especially the cows. Friesian and Friesian-cross cows, 454-525kg, made $1.69-$1.82/kg, Jersey-cross, 340-500kg, $1.34-$1.75/kg. In-calf Friesian traded at $697-$947, $1.65-$1.84/kg. Dairy heifer prices reflected good demand. Friesian and Friesian-cross earned $2.24-$2.38/kg, in-calf Friesian $1343, $2.70/kg.
