Stratford prime, boner and bull sale April 5

Numbers were low at the prime and boner sale at Stratford on Tuesday, with the yarding more consistent with a dairy store sale.

Prime numbers were reduced to two lines of steers, with Angus-Friesian, 605kg, making $2.56/kg, Belgium Blue, 617kg, $2.72/kg.

One line of Hereford-Friesian heifers, 610kg, sold for $2.58/kg, which was the extent of the prime cattle.

Prices were firm for a limited offering of boner cows, with Friesian and Friesian-cross, 610-615kg trading at $1.87-$1.97/kg, lighter types $1-$1.31/kg. Jersey, 426kg, fetched $1.48/kg, and in-calf Friesian, 455-640kg, sold over a wide range at $1.71-$2.11/kg. Empty Friesian heifers fetched $2.46/kg for 475kg and one line of Red Devon-cross cows earned $1.62/kg.

A small offering of store cattle made up the rest of the yarding, with R2 Hereford-cross steers, 441kg, making $2.59/kg, R2 Hereford-Friesian heifers, 365kg, $2.60/kg.

Weaner Friesian bulls were of mixed quality and sold for $290-$400 for 120-175kg, with Friesian-cross heifers fetching $280, Red Devon-cross $440.
