Stratford cattle fair May 11

A good yarding of cattle was offered at Stratford on Wednesday, with good demand for quality types.

Older steers were mainly good quality Traditional and exotic lines, with most selling for $1170-$1400 at $2.70-$2.80/kg, while Friesian, 460kg, earned $1160 at $2.52/kg. R3 Devon cross heifers sold for $970-$1065 at $2.49-$2.54/kg.

R2 cattle made up most of the offering and demand was strong, with all steers making $1080-$1480, Angus $2.94-$3.07/kg. More dairy influence came through in the heifer pens with all lines beef-Friesian cross. The better lines fetched $2.72-$2.75/kg, while Murray Grey-Friesian, Angus-Friesian and Hereford-cross lines earned $2.45-$2.63/kg.

Breeds flipped around in the weaner and R1 pens with more dairy influence in the steer section. Hereford-Friesian steers, 120-208kg, sold for $585-$750, other lines $510-$650, weaners $425-$635. Angus heifers, 130kg, returned $470, Charolais-Hereford, 125kg, $4/kg. Hereford-Friesian, 123-176kg, achieved $495-$640. A small offering of bulls were mainly Hereford-Friesian and made $685-$690, Angus, 160kg, $560.

While much of the focus was on the cattle offering, breeding ewes did make an appearance, though sold to limited interest. Two-tooth to 6-year, run-with-the-ram made $73, mixed age, $71. Lambs mainly sold for $44-$60, with prime lambs up to $106.
