Stratford cattle fair June 8

R2 cattle were the main feature of the cattle fair held at Stratford on Wednesday, and good quality steers in particular were popular.

A small offering of R3 steers also sold to strong demand, with Charolais-cross and Hereford-Friesian, 584-630kg, earning $2.84/kg. Even the Friesian lines managed $2.70-$2.80/kg.

Charolais-cross also dominated the R2 pens, where 345-411kg lines sold for $3.06-$3.14/kg, heavier lines $2.82/kg. Hereford-Friesian, 455-488kg, earned $2.82-$2.85/kg, slightly heavier lines $2.93-$3.01/kg. Angus steers fetched $945-$1310, $2.76-$3.02/kg. A number of single lines of beef-cross and exotic-cross returned just under $3/kg. R2 heifers sold on a mainly steady market with the better types making $2.64-$2.75/kg for Angus, Angus-Hereford and Red Devon. Beef-Friesian lines, 311-492kg, mainly earned $2.50-$2.59/kg. Friesian, 361-368kg, sold for $855-$860, $2.23-$2.36/kg.

Bulls were the main feature of the R1 section. Purebred Angus, 198-284kg, the centre of attention, earning $800-$1130. Other Angus, 280kg, made $760. Hereford-Friesian bulls, 260kg, fetched $810, and dairy lines mainly traded at $610-$660. Hereford-Friesian heifers, 154-220kg, made $600-$750, Simmental-Friesian, 187kg, $675. Nearly all lines fetched more than $3.40/kg.

A small offering of sheep sold well enough, with ram lambs topping the sale at $120, mixed-sex, ewe and wether lambs $63-$75. Two-tooth ewes returned $58, mixed-age $30-$62.
