Scale and good fertility on a rolling Riverton sheep and beef farm provide the core ingredients for a dairy conversion with room for wintering, heifers and supplements.

Braeland Holdings is an expansive 435 hectare Southland farm running 5679 stock units and producing a gross farm income a hectare of $1937 from a system that includes breeding ewes and heifer grazing.

Stock graze on 379ha effective, while 13.8ha is planted in exotic forest and 42ha is indigenous forest.

Undulating paddocks enjoy glimpses of the distant sea and that proximity to the coast ensures limited frosts to allow early spring and late autumn growth.

On a good base of fertility and grass growth, the farm has had 200kg DAP applied as maintenance on grass areas, while 250kg/ha of Cropmaster 16 High K is applied on balage or silage paddocks and 500kg Super 10 as well as 2.5 tonnes of  lime spread on new grass.

The combination of natural characteristics, fertiliser and farming practices has translated into good production. Lambing from September 17 onwards has achieved 145% with lambs reaching a carcase weight between 18 and 18.7kg.

Surplus feed on the farm makes between 600 and 800 bales of balage or hay each year, with up to 300 bales sold each year as the ewes are wintered solely on grass. For the past three years the hoggets have been grazed on swedes and balage for six weeks of winter.

Up to 20ha of swedes is sown each year and the bulk of it is fed to about 230 dairy heifers grazed on the farm. The crop usually yields 12t or more of drymatter a hectare.

Rock from a pit on the farm provides a solid base for a good lane system around the farm leading to 86 well-fenced paddocks.

Implements, supplements and stock are well catered for in buildings and facilities including a three-stand woolshed with covered yards, and a two-stand woolshed near the main house.

A three-bedroom split-level home is the main residence, while a second three-bedroom home provides further accommodation.

Braeland Holdings is for sale at $9.2 million plus GST. For further information contact PGG Wrightson agent Todd Anderson on 03 211 3147 or 027 487 4355. It can be viewed at www.pggwre.co.nz.
