Shedloads of sheds

The fertile flats of a 72 hectare dairy farm for sale near Dargaville grow the grass and the proof is in the production, with a lift in cow numbers giving it a target of more than 90,000kg milksolids (MS) this season.

Quality Kaipara clay is a top soil for maize, kumara and other horticulture crops and this farm has a good mix of rye, clover and kikuyu for milk production, with annuals undersown in autumn.

Megan Browning from PGG Wrightson Real Estate said the combination of fertility, good infrastructure and ease of management made it a must-see farm, with the added bonus of being located just 10km from Dargaville.

Based 9km along a metal road in a good dairying area, the farm now milks 208 cows and winters about 130 of them, with the in-calf heifers returning at the beginning of May. Three seasons ago it milked 170 cows on 55ha for a production of 62,000kg MS, before adding an extra chunk of land into the milking platform last year and more cows.

Good infrastructure was a strength of the farm, Browning said, with substantial shedding from its kumara days as well as the 15-aside herringbone dairy. An eight-pen flexi-tunnel and a small three-bay calf shed are used for the calves, while a massive 10-bay kumara shed is partly leased out and has power as well as temperature control for five of those bays. Behind the kumara shed is another 10-bay shed used for implements that could easily be used for calf rearing. If that's not enough, a four-bay implement shed with power and concrete in one bay stands beside the house.

Effluent disposal from the dairy is simple as it's simply pumped onto the land by a petrol motor to pods from ponds with 120-day holding capacity.

Like the shedding, the farm has ample accommodation including the main home, a tidy and spacious 1950s weatherboard house with four bedrooms. A tidy two-bedroom home was built in 2004 on a large section with good views, while the third dwelling is a two-bedroom portacom by the dairy with its own facilities.

The farm is for sale at $2.35 million plus GST and can be viewed at www.pggwre.co.nz ID DAG2730617.

Browning also has a 98ha dairy farm for sale near Dargaville which is a first-farm opportunity in a good location with fertile flats and rolling country. The farm milks 180 cows for a production of 52,000kg MS and has a 16-aside herringbone dairy plus a three-bedroom home.

It's priced at $1.25 million plus GST and can be viewed at www.pggwre.co.nz. For more information contact Browning on 09 439 3344 or 027 668 8468.
