Managing director John Coombridge says having skilled team members in key roles long-term is the reason for their longevity. It has meant they can learn from the past while innovating for the future. Wilf Coombridge started making concrete fenceposts and gates for local farmers in the 1940s. Fences evolved into hay elevators, and a range of steel-based machinery followed.

It hasn’t all been plain sailing, with peaks and troughs following the dairy payout. The factory was flattened by a tornado in 1948, then significantly damaged by fire in 1950. Three generations later, they are still in the same Norton Road location but their floorspace has grown exponentially.

General manager Dave Meade was a dairy farmer, and understands the demands on a farmer’s time and the importance of reliability.

“We believe your SAM equipment should last through the years, which is why our products are designed and made here in NZ with the best materials we can find, backed up by exceptional service”.

Product releases this year include a new Quick Hitch providing effortless, simple coupling from the tractor across a range of trailed implements. Once connected to a three-point linkage, operators have a clear view of the tow-pin from the tractor cab, ensuring an easy pickup every time.

Mudguards are now available on all tandem-axle SAM fertiliser spreaders. Moulded from UV-stabilised polyethylene, they are resistant to most chemical and organic fertilisers and reduce debris chips to chassis and running gear while needing less cleaning.
