An 88ha dairy farm for sale north of Morrinsville buys in just 20 bales of straw for the cows each year, making it a low-expense system that achieved 74,800kg milksolids in last year’s drought.

Terry Court from LJ Hooker in Hamilton said the only supplements other than straw fed to the cows were silage and balage made on the milking platform which spreads over flat to easy rolling contour and is along a no-exit road.

“It doesn’t have any inputs – no palm kernel, no meal, no maize silage and no bought-in silage. All the silage and balage is made on the milking platform along with 6-8ha of summer crop.

“Its contour is all flat to really easy and you could take an ordinary car over 75% of it.”

The father and son operation on the farm calves 240 cows and milks 235 through the 20-aside herringbone dairy that has Westfalia plant, with races leading to 44 paddocks.

Even the calves are grazed on the farm for 12 months before they are grazed elsewhere.

“It’s in good heart, with good renewed pasture, very few weeds and ready to hum.”

Farm buildings include two implement sheds, two hay barns and a feedpad that is not used.

Accommodation is a four-bedroom home.

The farm will be auctioned on October 24. For more information call Court on 07 889 3957.
