Rongotea sale May 18

Strong winds and rain didn’t dampen the spirits of buyers at Rongotea on Wednesday, with prices steady, Tristan Gordon from New Zealand Farmers Livestock reported.

Numbers of adult cattle were very limited, with 2-year Hereford-Friesian steers, 505kg-510kg, selling for $2.46- $2.51/kg. Friesian bulls, 455kg, weren’t far behind at $2.41/kg.  

A few cows bumped up numbers, with in-milk empty Friesian cows, 373kg, making $2/kg, boners $1.59-$1.73/kg. Beef boner cows earned $1.87/kg, Jersey $1.54/kg.

Younger cattle took up most of the auctioneer’s time and prices were very steady. Autumn-born 1-year Friesian steers had the weight at 240-333kg, and fetched $2.50-$2.54/kg. Higher cpk prices for 199kg Hereford-Friesian put per-head prices at similar levels of $710.

Demand for Friesian bulls was strong and 187-199kg made $2.82-$3.06/kg, 122-140kg $3.07-$3.26/kg. Hereford-Friesian, 105kg, returned $420, crossbred lines $2.79-$3/kg.

Quality Angus-cross 1-year heifers, 247kg, sold for $720 at $2.91/kg, Charolais-cross, 185kg, $3.45/kg.

In the weaner pens Hereford-Friesian steers made $770, Charolais bulls $860, Simmental $775. All weaner heifers were Hereford-Friesian and earned $460-$690. Top Friesian bull calves fetched $280-$340, medium $180-$270, small $100-$170. Top Hereford-Friesian bulls returned $300-$350, medium $200-$290, small $150-$190. Hereford-Friesian heifers sold to $200-$300 small lines $100-$190.

Mixed sex lambs earned $71-$108.
