Rongotea sale May 11

Dry conditions did little to deter buyers at Rongotea on Wednesday, with prices holding recent levels, Darryl Harwood from NZ Farmers Livestock reported.

Older cattle numbers were limited with weaners making the biggest appearance. Three-year crossbred steers, 675kg, sold for $1800 at $2.67/kg, though were the only line of this age offered. There was more action in the 2-year pens as the ever-popular Hereford-Friesian, 295-383kg, earned $2.62-$2.98/kg, Angus-cross, 440kg, $2.73/kg. Charolais-cross, Friesian and crossbred mainly fetched $2.45-$2.59/kg.

Heifer quality was mixed with the top Hereford-Friesian earning $2.69/kg, while other lines returned $2.09-$2.39/kg. Crossbred, 335-360kg, traded at $1.96-$2.49/kg.

Low numbers of 1-year cattle sold to limited interest with prices maintaining recent levels. Beef-cross steers, 342-425kg, realised $2.12-$2.34/kg, lighter lines $1.91-$2.24/kg. Bulls of similar breeding tipped the scales at 310-390kg and made $2.35-$2.71/kg, Friesian heifers, 227kg, $2.18/kg.

Larger numbers of weaners continued to come out and prices reflected strong demand for cattle to carry through winter. Hereford-Friesian steers mainly sold for $545-$830, heifers $487-$655, bulls, 183kg, $560. Charolais-cross also featured and sold well, with the steers earning $570-$680, heifers $387-$590. Murray Grey and crossbred heifers returned $455-$610, while a line of 307kg Angus-cross sold to $645. Friesian weaner bulls, 183-188 kg, realised $519-$530, Angus, 230 kg, $515.

A good yarding of calves also made an appearance. Friesian bulls fetched $85-$320, Hereford-Friesian, $80-$360, crossbred $170-$200. Hereford-Friesian heifers sold for $75-$295.

Cull dairy stock continue to come out with empty Friesian heifers, 315-375kg, selling for $1.81-$1.87/kg, crossbred $1.38-$2.27/kg. Hereford-Friesian and Angus heifers, 310-313kg, made $2.62-$2.66/kg.

Friesian boner cows reached $1.41-$1.63/kg for the better types, medium at $1.49/kg, crossbred $1.22-$1.85/kg.

Mixed age ewes sold for $76, wether lambs $68.
