Rongotea sale March 16

Cull dairy cow numbers continued to climb at Rongotea on Wednesday, while store numbers were limited.

Demand was strong for heavier dairy cows, with prices reaching $1.81-$1.91/kg for higher-yielding Friesian. Boners traded at $1.56-$1.70/kg for both Friesian and crossbred, with lighter crossbred, 392kg, down to $1.42/kg. Run-with-the-bull crossbred cows sold for $850, the same as empty Friesian heifers, 386kg.

Steer quality was not up to recent weeks, and $/kg prices dropped. Angus, 515kg, sold at $2.45/kg, Friesian, 352-455kg, $2.09-$2.20. Crossbred, 390-460kg, was variable, with lesser types making $1.13/kg, and tops $2.19/kg. 

Hereford bulls were popular, with 565kg making $2.70/kg. Angus and Hereford-Friesian, 445-455kg, sold for $2.51-$2.54/kg, one Speckle Park, 565kg, $2.25/kg.

Angus-cross 2-year heifers topped their section, making $2.61/kg for 483kg. Hereford-Friesian, 335-405kg, sold to $990, $2.42-$2.44/kg, Friesian and crossbred, 380-430kg, $2.30-$2.32.

Weaner bulls were lesser quality and prices eased. Friesian, 175-186kg, sold for $590-$632, 98-119kg $363-$430. Crossbred, 117-145kg, earned $380-$400. Heifers were of similar quality to the previous sale and sold on a steady market. All were Hereford-Friesian and $550 was paid for 220kg, while 108-139kg earned $430-$540. Friesian bull calves made $180-$250, Hereford-Friesian, $200-$250, crossbred, $80-$140. Hereford-Friesian heifer calves earned $180-$250.

Two-tooth ewes fetched $92, mixed sex lambs made $80-$88, medium types $42-$60.
