Rongotea sale April 13

Quality cattle continued to sell well at Rongotea on Wednesday, while lesser-quality crossbred lines were harder work.

Hereford-Friesian steers made up most of the 2-year section, with 340-470kg making $2.53-$2.68/kg, and Angus-cross, 342kg, at $2.51/kg. The top crossbred lines fetched $2.35-$2.48/kg, with lesser lines back to $2.16-$2.20/kg. Friesian bulls, 365kg, sold for $890, $2.43/kg, with crossbred fetching less than $2/kg. In the heifer pens Hereford-Friesian and Angus-cross proved popular, making $2.65-$2.73/kg, Friesian, 330-394kg, $1.78-$2.17/kg.

The yearling market followed the older cattle and held recent levels. Angus-cross, 235kg, made $3.54/kg, Hereford-Friesian, 305kg, $3.09/kg. Friesian steers sold for $2.04/kg, crossbred $2.25-$2.45/kg.

Good-quality lines featured in the heifer pens with Hereford-Friesian, 298kg, earning $2.73/kg, 178-208kg $2.88-$3.14/kg, lighter lines up to $3.43/kg. Lesser Angus and crossbred lines returned $1.96-$2.30/kg.

Bulls finished off the section with Friesian, 265kg, realising $2.75/kg, 170kg $3.55/kg. Hereford-Friesian, 345-365kg, sold up to $860, $2.35-$2.43/kg, lighter lines more than $3/kg.

Weaner prices were steady with good demand for most types. Friesian bulls achieved $450-$580, with top lines to $767-$790. Heavier Hereford-Friesian sold to $885 with lighter lines at $535-$660, while crossbred fetched $375-$625. Hereford-Friesian heifers earned $528-$800, Angus-cross $430. No steers were offered. In the calf pens bulls returned $150-$350, heifers $170-$290.

Boner cow numbers were limited to Friesian which sold for $1.57-$1.68/kg, and Jersey at $1.57/kg.

Sheep numbers were limited to just lambs with ram lambs making $68, mixed-sex $83-$90.
