Nick Berry has resigned after eight years as general manager at RD1. He had overseen the retail stores, property division, and livestock team at the Fonterra subsidiary.

Berry, who was appointed by PGW managing director Mark Dewdney, will join PGW on July 7 as new business growth manager.

“He’ll help with our dairy growth strategy and also to bed in new acquisitions to the business,” Dewdney said.

“It’s a small business community and we both live in Hamilton, so we run into each other from time to time. We talk about business and those discussions led to this opportunity.”

PGW wanted to increase its rural retail market share among dairy farming areas and Berry was a good operator who had worked at a senior level for a long time, Dewdney said.

“We’re looking to improve our product range and our relationships with dairy farmers. It’s a very competitive market and it’s all about technical expertise and understanding the business.”

Berry, who will be based in Hamilton, couldn’t be contacted for comment.

He will report to PGW general manager retail Stephen Guerin.

After two tough weather-related years in Australia, the PGW seeds business was benefiting from regular rain in the farming areas of Victoria and New South Wales, with farmers renewing pasture, Dewdney said.

“We’re having a normal year there and are happy with that.”
