Options galore in central Canterbury

Avatar photo
A fully-irrigated central Canterbury finishing property in three titles offers numerous options for a new owner.  The 79.68ha farm at Aylesbury, 35km west of Christchurch, has grown maize, kale and lucerne in recent years, wintered cows and grazed heifers for dairy farmers; achieving between five and seven cuts off its lucerne as a result of the quality soils and solid fertiliser history.

This year it has 50ha planted in six-year-old lucerne, 18.5ha in maize and 9.5ha in kale.Ben Turner from Bayleys said the lucerne had been well-maintained and has produced its five-to-seven cuts every year since its second year.

Annual ryegrass is sown after the maize each year and the cows are then grazed on it in September and October. This year the kale is following a crop of oats and pea silage.

Mainland minerals have been used for fertiliser on the Lismore soils during the past six years. Fertiliser is applied in two lots of solid and two or three applications of slurry. Solid cow manure has also been spread on the entire property every year to increase the organic matter in the soil.

A Turborain travelling irrigator covers the property, with a small amount of K-line around the sheds. A consent allows a groundwater take of 50 litres a second from a 300mm diameter bore that is 219m deep.

It provides a maximum take of 4320 cubic metres a day and 340,520 cubic metres a year. The Turborain runs on a 12-day rotation, but could be spedup by shifting at night on every second day, Turner said.

A feature of the property is the quality of the sheds, including a 720-square metre lockable storage shed with sliding doors at both ends that is suitable for multiple uses, plus a four-bay shed with a lock-up workshop.

The 260-square metre home was built in 2003 and Turner said it was a great family home with plenty of room for children to play, set in large lawns with established trees and hedges. The farm has a deadline sale date of March 30.
